The Town of Kiawah Island completed its first spring migration banding season (end of March-May) at the Captain Sam’s banding station. Following a very good fall and winter, we were not sure what to expect during the spring.  Spring migration is usually much less exciting (in species diversity and abundance) along the coast of South Carolina and that definitely was the case at Kiawah Island this year.  We operated for 9 days and banded a total of 87 birds, representing 21 species (see table below).  There were 42 recaptures of birds that had been banded in previous sessions.  In addition, 2 Painted Buntings were captured that were originally banded at a currently unknown location.  The most commonly banded species were Yellow-rumped Warblers (30), all of which were banded on March 24th, and Gray Catbirds (22).  Highlights included Veery (1), Blackpoll Warbler (1), and Common Ground-Dove (1). We will be taking a break from banding during the hot summer months but will continue our efforts in August with hopes of catching some early fall migrants.  View slideshow of captured birds.
