The Town of Kiawah Island continued its banding efforts throughout the winter months at the Captain Sam’s banding station.  Scheduling conflicts and lack of personnel only allowed us to operate for 2 days, once in January and once in February.  Next year, we plan to band 1-2 times per month from December-March.  A total of 388 birds, representing 14 species were banded (see table below). There were 21 recaptures of birds that had been banded in previous sessions.  The most commonly banded species was the Yellow-rumped Warbler (371) which made up an astounding 96% of the total winter catch.  Other highlights included American Robin (2), Field Sparrow (1), and Savannah Sparrow (1).  View slideshow of captured birds.
