The Town of Kiawah Island completed its first fall migration banding season (September-November) at the Cougar Island banding station. We operated for 8 days and banded a total of 308 birds, representing 39 species (see table below).  There were 25 recaptures of birds that had been banded in previous sessions.  September 29th was the best day of season with 96 birds banded.  Species diversity was highest on October 6th when 19 species were captured as large numbers of neotropical migrants moved through Kiawah Island. The most commonly banded species were Gray Catbirds (48) and Common Yellowthroats (39).  Highlights included Gray-cheeked Thrush (1), Cape May Warbler (1), Blackpoll Warbler (1), and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher (1).  View slideshow of captured birds.
