Date: July 23, 2009
Location: Western end of Kiawah Island (Captain Sam's Spit)
Participants: Jim Jordan (TOKI) and
Aaron Given (TOKI)
Weather: Mostly sunny skies with a morning low of 72° F rising to 85° F.
Nets: 14 nets were opened for
approximately 2.5 hours from 6:30 to 9:00 am.
Notes: This was the first banding effort of the year. A total of 28 individuals
of 5 species were captured and banded (details in table below). We were surprised with the number of prairie warblers captured
this early in the season. The birds were likely early migrants because many of the birds had high levels of fat deposits
and this species was not detected during breeding bird surveys conducted in the area in June. With temperatures increasing into
the mid 80s and lots of early success, we decided to close the nets early to minimize the risk of stress or harm to additional birds
that may have flown into the nets while we were busy banding birds. Birds, especially small species, can quickly overheat and
die when left in the net exposed to high heat and direct sunlight. Bird banding sessions will continue throughout the year with
a focus on fall and winter months.
