Kiawah Island is an 8,000 acre residential-resort community located approximately 20 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina. Kiawah Island has a resident population of approximately 1500 people and is a popular vacation spot for thousands of visitors every summer.  Maximum elevation on Kiawah is 31 feet (9.44 meters), with an average elevation of 5.5 feet (1.66 meters).  The island is oriented west to east, with the front beach facing south/southwest. 
 
Development of the island began in the early 1970’s and continues today.  The western third of the island consists of single-family homes, most situated on lots less than 0.5 acres (0.20 hectares), condos, villa complexes, a large oceanfront hotel, shopping areas, recreational areas, tennis complexes, and golf courses.   The middle third of the island consists of single-family homes, most situated on lots less than 0.5 acres (0.20 hectares), and golf courses.  The eastern third of the island consists primarily of single-family homes situated on lots 0.5 acres (0.20 hectares) and larger, golf courses, and 2 large undeveloped areas (Cougar Island and Little Bear Island).
