MEET THE 2012 BOBCATS

The Town of Kiawah Island, in partnership with the Kiawah Conservancy, initiated a Bobcat GPS study in 2007.  Over the last 5 years, more than 35,000 individual locations of bobcats have been collected from 37 different bobcats.  You can view location data and information for cats captured during the 2009 and 2010 seasons by clicking here. View 2011 Bobcat Location Data.
 
Trapping for the 2012 season was conducted between January 18 and January 23, 2012.  We are still waiting on 2 additional collars and will start trapping again as soon as they arrive.  This page provides details on each bobcat captured.

* Janaury 18, 2012 - First bobcat of the 2012 trapping season!  This 2-year old female (13 lbs, 7 oz) was captured in the Preserve.  She was fitted with Collar 200.  This bobcat was PIT tagged as a kitten in 2010 and is the offspring of Bobcat 350 from 2012.

* Janaury 18, 2012 - This adult female (15 lbs, 9 oz) was captured on Flyway Drive and fitted with Collar 300. She was also collared during 2011 as Bobcat 900.  This bobcat was recaptured again on January 19, 2012 and released.
* January 18, 2012 - This young female (12 lbs, 1 oz) was captured on Cougar Island.  She was too small to collar and was released.
* January 19, 2012 - This adult female (17 lbs, 4 oz) was captured on Curlew Court.  She was fitted with Collar 350.  This bobcat was collared during 2008 (Bobcat 150) and 2010 (Bobcat 190).  She is also the mother of Bobcat 200.
* January 19, 2012 - This adult female (14 lbs, 2 oz) was captured on Willet Island and fitted with Collar 400.

* January 20, 2012 - This juvenile male (13 lbs, 8 oz) was captured near Forestay Court.  He was too small to collar and was released.
* January 20, 2012 -  This adult female (15 lbs, 8 oz) was captured on Flyway Drive and fitted with Collar 250.  She was also collared during 2011 as Bobcat 800.

* January 23, 2012 - This adult female (14 lbs) was captured near Beachwalker Park and fiited with Collar 450.
